What Are Toxins And Why You Need to Get Rid of Them ASAP
Most of us lead busy, hectic lives in a fast-paced world, rushing off to reach work on time or grabbing a quick lunch because of that important meeting. Running the house is no easy feat either. From managing the maid to taking care of your family, you barely get time to sit and take a deep breath. In all of this, what we fail to realise is that it leaves us little time to care for ourselves.
One such self-care activity is detoxing. We’ve heard or read about toxins, detox diets and cleanses, and detox water. But have you ever wondered what exactly these are and why should you consider “detoxing”? Let us tell you all about it.
Toxins, simply put, are chemicals or substances that are harmful to us. They can wreak havoc in our body’s normal functioning, and long-term build-up of toxins in the body can lead to serious health complications. Surely you are wondering what these toxins are and how you can get rid of them? You’ve come to the right place.
We will start with the types of toxins.
The world we live in today suffers from all kinds of pollution: air, water, sound, soil, noise, light, etc. We interact with these pollutants everyday whether we stay indoors or travel outside. The pollutants act as toxins against our bodies, interfering with the smooth functioning of the body’s processes. These external toxins are the reason why we show premature signs of ageing or always feel sick for no reason.
The main culprits for external pollution are dust, smog, smoke, lead (found in old paint), mercury (generally found in fish), poor quality air or stale air, to name a few
Believe it or not, our own bodies produce toxins too. It’s actually a completely natural process; our bodies create waste products, like sweat or urine, while going about their daily business. Generally, our bodies are equipped to discard these waste products. But sometimes they are not eliminated efficiently and build up inside the body. Over the years, this build-up, if unchecked, can cause serious problems.
You didn’t see that one coming, did you? How you treat yourself, mind and body, also plays a huge role in your overall health. As we mentioned earlier, you are so busy in your lives that
you don’t take the time to relax, unwind or destress. Not doing so can have serious repercussions on your physical and mental health.
Ways to Detox
Where there is a will, there’s a way. It is possible to get rid of all these toxins your encounter and keep your body and mind in good health. These few suggestions will help you detox from all the sources of toxins, be they external, internal or toxic behaviours.
Stay Hydrated – The importance of having enough water cannot be overstated. Our bodies are 60% water. Drinking 2-3 litres of water makes sure that we are flushing out toxins and keeping our body supplied with fresh clean water. To add more power to the humble water, you can consider having detox water: Add a few chunks of watermelon to water and keep it in the fridge for a few hours. Enjoy this delicious watermelon-infused water and detox at the same time.
Have Green Grapes – Grapes are considered to be a good detox food. They draw away built up toxins and direct them to the intestines to be removed from your body. Try and have them everyday and make sure you keep having plenty of water with it.
Have herbal/green teas – They may not always taste great but they are so good for your health. Even one cup a day everyday can have a detoxing and restorative impact. On the plus side, they will also help in weight loss by improving your metabolism.
Protect yourself from the harsh sun – Avoid going out in the sun from 11am to 4pm if you can. Wear a cap or a scarf when you do go out. In places with higher temperatures and harsh sunlight, carrying an umbrella is recommended. You can also wear sunscreen, especially if you get rashes or sunburns when out in the sun. By wearing sunscreen, you create a protective barrier between your skin and the environmental pollutants, apart from shielding your skin from UV rays and sunburn. Remember to reapply every 3 hours if you will be out the whole day. Opt for products that are SLS-free, paraben-free, and alcohol-free as these will be gentle on your skin. Note, however, that you should avoid wearing sunscreen in the morning time (before 11 am); doing so may impact the absorption of Vitamin D in your body.
Destress – It is easier said than done, we know. But it is extremely important to do. Take mandatory time out from your day, even if 10 mins, during which you do absolutely nothing. Find a quiet place and just take deep breaths; try not to think of anything or anyone at that time. Just be in the moment and let go of all worries. Trust us, you will feel better.
We hope you got some or all of the answers you are looking for. So don’t delay, detox away right now!
